For most people, air travel involves waiting in super-long security
lines, tweeting angrily about your delayed flight, and eating bagged
pretzels while stuffed in a middle seat. But somehow, for one couple,
air travel is all about love.
Dottie Coven and Keith Stewart frequently fly for business, so they
approached Southwest Airlines about getting married midair. The airline
was totally game, and worked with the couple to plan the nuptials on a
flight from Nashville to the appropriately named Love Field in Dallas.
It was a win-win for Southwest, which used the stunt to promote their
new direct flights on that route.
Thirty of Dottie and Keith's friends and family accompanied them, but
100 other passengers were total strangers and had no idea they were
going to be wedding guests until they got an extra boarding pass
alerting them of the big event.
"A lot of things around flying tend to not be fun," Dottie said on the flight. "Let's make it fun again!"
The couple had a band playing and decorated the gate with balloons, and a
flower girl handed out peanuts down the plane's center aisle. And an
officiant conducted the ceremony over the plane's loudspeaker. "If
anyone can show just cause why they might not be lawfully joined
together, let them push their flight attendant call button now or
forever hold your peace," he said.
