Stranded for nearly a month, this sweet girl is finally playing and running like a healthy dog
After being stranded at a kennel in the back of a shed for a few weeks, a 5-month-old puppy is now running and playing like a healthy dog again. Though she was covered with a blanket, she hadn't had a single morsel of food for up to a month.RELATED: Puppy Is Overjoyed to Reunite with Man Who Saved His Life
Things weren’t looking so good for the puppy, Scarlet, when she was brought into a shelter by a woman who said, "She's just so sick; I don't know what to do." At just 7 lbs. 7 oz.—half of what she should have weighed at her age—Scarlet wasn’t able to stand on her legs or hold up her head.
“We think she had probably gone 3 to 4 weeks without food,” says Martha Wittkowski of the Animal Lifeline of Iowa, a special needs no-kill shelter. “We didn’t know if she would make it that first night.” Scarlet was immediately given fluids through an IV and spent a week in intensive care. It was there that she took her first steps since being abandoned, and the doctors soon noticed another impediment to feeling 100% better.

Scarlet had a broken elbow, and since it was an old injury, doctors are unable to correct it with surgery. Still, this little fighter has made just about a full recovery. “It’s remarkable; she’s running really well now,” says Wittkowski. “She’s actually a 5-month-old puppy. It’s dramatic the change just from good nutrition and a lot of love.”
The extraordinary puppy is up to weighing over 13 pounds and is still at the shelter.
