You and Your Dog May Be Able to ‘Talk’ to Each Other Soon

Researchers have developed new technology that'll translate pets' and owners' feelings to each other

Wouldn’t it be nice if your pooch understood everything you said to him—and you could make sense of his sometimes-confusing noises and body language? In the not-so-distant future, pet/owner communication may improve thanks to new technology from researchers at North Carolina State University.

David Roberts, PhD, a co-lead author of the research and computer science professor at NC State, says, “We’ve developed a platform for computer-mediated communication between humans and dogs that opens the door to new avenues for interpreting dogs’ behavioral signals and sending them clear and unambiguous cues in return.”
By simply putting a harness on the dog, which holds a palm-size computer, you and your pup will be able to communicate effortlessly. Dr. Roberts says, “We’ve incorporated speakers and vibrating motors, called haptics, into the harness, which enable us to communicate with the dogs.”

Before this technology reaches your doghouse, they’ll use it on search-and-rescue and service dogs. They’ll be equipped with environmental sensors to detect hazards for canines out in the field, stress indicators for guide dogs, who are taught to disguise feelings of stress, and heart rate and body temperature sensors to keep those animals healthy.
Barbara Sherman, PhD, DVM, a clinical professor of animal behavior at the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine who co-authored the research says, “This platform is an amazing tool, and we’re excited about using it to improve the bond between dogs and their humans.”
