If you're looking for a unique and stylish weekend break away, why not consider Amsterdam? City hotel accommodation is easy to find and excellence almost comes as standard in the Dutch capital! Choose one of the best Amsterdam city hotel options and you are guaranteed a comfortable and relaxing stay.
Great Attractions In the City
From the majority of the Amsterdam city hotels, the main attractions are easy to access. There is much to see here, so make sure you do your research before you. It helps to have an idea of what you want to make a priority on your agenda.
Oude Kirk
The Oude Kirk is the city's most interesting church and one that came from humble beginnings - starting its life as a simple wooden chapel, back in the 1300s. It grew significantly in stature and prowess in the 1500s, and at the time had 38 altars, each with its own guild-sponsored priest. Ironically, the church is located in the centre of the infamous red light district, but it still stands proud, exclaiming its lessons of virtue and righteousness. The inscription above the bridal chamber states, 'marry in haste, mourn in leisure'. Rembrandt's wife is buried here and her floor grave is overseen by various styles of Gothic and Renaissance features, stained-glass windows and other fascinating artefacts.
Rijksmuseum Museum
The Rijksmuseum is another wonderful attribute of the city. Designed by PJH Cuypers and opened more than one hundred years ago, the museum holds the country's largest collection of art and artifacts. Recently revamped, after a ten-year closure, the museum displays Dutch paintings from the 15th century up until the present day, Asian art, and the collection of Golden Age jewels - such as Rembrandt's Night Watch and Vermeer's Kitchen Maid. Also displaying furniture from centuries past, objects from Asia including lacquer work, statues, ceramics and textiles, and housing an oasis of a garden with magnificent architectural features, this museum is a treasure trove of all things art. It is a must for anyone interested in art throughout the centuries.
Perhaps the most historically significant of the museums here is the Jewish Museum, which is housed in four synagogues in the Jewish quarter of the city. Depicting the fascinating history of the Jews through the ages, their story is laid bare in this informative place. There are exhibits here designed especially for children and many temporary exhibits too. The museum is well put together and is a great place to spend a few hours on an afternoon in the city.
Some of the sights and attractions in the city do require booking, so make sure you consult the staff of your Amsterdam city hotel for advice on opening times and how to book.
