Some courageous and forward thinking scientists and visionaries maintain that we are on the threshold of a great experience. They believe that we are experiencing a Shift in Consciousness. Not in the future, not tomorrow or next week, but today, in the immediate present, gathering momentum with every passing day, moving towards a new world and a new civilization. They call it The Great Shift in Consciousness. But what are we shifting from, and what are we shifting towards?
For centuries we have lived lives that have been directed by our minds. We have allowed our head to lead, ignoring the messages that have come from our hearts. We have accepted that life is all about competition, profit, individualism, winning and war. We have ignored the leadings of our hearts that speak more of cooperation, compassion, kindness and love.
Our brain is a wonderful instrument. It is capable of performing a lot of useful functions. We can think, solve, create and analyze with our brains. With our brains we process thoughts. With it we can analyze, invent, solve and do a lot of things. We owe a lot to the marvel of our brains. Without it there would be no high powered cars, no wide body planes, and no magnificent and beautiful buildings. But the brain is only capable of intellectualizing. And let's not forget that the brain has brought us wars and revolutions, pogroms and massacres. Our brain is nothing more than a thought processing mechanism. It is not an exaggeration to say that some day in the future computers will be able to mimic the thought processing capability of the brain. We are well on the way to this right now.
On the other hand, the heart is the seat of far more subtler emotions like love, compassion, tolerance and forgiveness. These are unique, and can never be imitated by machines. The heart is the seat of nobler emotions than the brain. For thousands of years, through the Bible years and on through the Middle Ages, the heart has been considered as the seat and source of these emotions. This is the promise of the great Shift in Consciousness. The Visionaries and Mystics maintain that just as we have come to believe that war, violence and aggression is the norm, we can begin to cultivate a New Heart where Love, Compassion and Forgiveness is the norm. They maintain that we have allowed ourselves to be hypnotized into our present beliefs, and that we can transform our lives and experience a Higher Consciousness.
One of the most unforgettable moments in American history occurred on August 28, 1963. On that day before an enormous crowd of hundreds of thousands gathered before the Lincoln Memorial, Martin Luther King Jr. spoke words that will forever survive through the ages. He reminded his audience of the long struggle of the black race to overcome racial hatred. He spoke of those who stood at the forefront of the battle and faced police dogs, guns and brutality. Then he shared with them the vision that he saw:
I have a dream... "I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."
Years passed, and then one day the dream was accomplished... Maybe not entirely, but they took a giant step towards that dream; Barack Obama was elected President of the United States of America. What seemed impossible had become possible.
Today we face another similar great challenge that seems impossible. We face a world hypnotized by greed and selfishness and resolved that war and violence is the only answer. But like Martin Luther King Jr. the visionaries and spiritual leaders also have a dream. Actually the dream has much the same themes as King's dream. It involves a peaceful world where compassion, respect and love are present.
Despite the vast scale of the challenge, forward looking organizations such as the Shift network, The World peace Movement, the United Nations have put together programs to educate members and indeed the rest of the world, in raising their consciousness level. Most of our world lives at a consciousness level of selfishness, greed and lack in their lives. The Shift Network regularly provides free videos, seminars, and articles that emphasize the need of raising our consciousness to a higher level.
Despite the vast scale of the challenge, forward looking organizations such as the Shift network, The World peace Movement, the United Nations have put together programs to educate members and indeed the rest of the world, in raising their consciousness level. Most of our world lives at a consciousness level of selfishness, greed and lack in their lives. Rather than continuing to glorify military strength, war and patriotism, they promote the need and hope for a future that is peaceful and collaborative. They insist that we are wired for peace and our hearts are the medium through which we can achieve this magnificent goal. They constantly remind us that Global Peace does not come from decisions in high places, or even United Nation agreements, but rather that peace starts in our individual hearts.
Vince DaCosta writes persuasively of the trajectory our world is on which is leading to destruction of our Natural Environment, Social upheaval and Economic breakdown. Many of the world's leading Scientific and Spiritual Leaders are warning that our present lifestyle cannot be sustained in the future.
