It is not fair to compare the slow cooker vs dutch oven as both have outstanding qualities in their own right. Putting these two cooking methods to the test, result in equally strong points for both.
Slow Cooker Advantages
The crock pot as it is known can easily be called a Dutch oven with a temperature control and plug in capability. Anything that can be cooked in the one can be done equally well in the other. One of the trump cards however is the fact that it is the perfect cooking method for working people. Food cooks slowly without the stress of spoiling or burning and without regular stirring. You can prepare your food in the morning and after work have a hearty meal ready for dishing. Also great to start your meal for the next day before retiring at night.
Dutch Oven Advantages
Dutch oven on the other hand is also used for slow cooking, with the advantage that it is versatile in the fact that it is used on open fires as well. Cast iron cooking is a favorite among most cooks. Browning and frying food is done in the same pot in which you cook your meal as oppose to the crock pot, where you must brown food and fry onions before transfer. These versatile pots can be used on stovetops, gas burners and the oven, great for outdoors and at low temperature; it cooks food in the same manner as the crock pot.
Slow Cooker VS Dutch Oven
With both having outstanding qualities, however some of their functions do overlap. They can both be used for slow cooking with tender and succulent food. Many leave their food in the oven in a cast iron pot and feel safe when leaving the house. The fact that a Dutch oven can brown and braise food however makes it a preferred method for many. A plug-in pot on the other hand has its advantages, as you do not need a stove. That is if you do not mind eating your food colorless.
Browning and frying food before cooking, regardless of the type of meal prepared remains a favorite to most cooks. It definitely adds to the flavor of the food and that is where the slow cooker has a disadvantage. Both are equally safe cooking methods; however, the Dutch oven may be more economical. Gas is much cheaper than electricity, as well as paraffin stoves. The fact that it is used on hot coal makes it even more economical.
