1. There are no shortcuts. Everyone has to figure out their life for themselves. "It's only because of all the things that I had to figure out that I was compelled to discover and to create what I now have. At some point, I figured out the life that I wanted so I made some good, along with some bad, decisions. Taking things as they come and taking them head on in life is really the only way," she says.
2. Do the wrong thing. Fail miserably. Try out different things and explore your options. "If you knew what you wanted to be when you were 6 years old — great! If you have no idea what you want to be, that's OK! Try out different things until something fits. Tell yourself: 'Hey, maybe this could work' and try it; 'Maybe I should try that out,' and try it out. It took me a dozen 'wrong things' until something worked out. When it did, I hung on tight, and still am eight years later, to my company, Nasty Gal."
3. Inspiration comes from obvious and not-so-obvious places, so be well-read and mix up your reading material. "Sometimes the expectation of being inspired in one specific way may close you off to the actual inspiration. Keep an open mind — inspiration comes from everywhere. You have to expose yourself to things and then what sticks will stick depending on what's going on in your life."
4. Set work/life financial boundaries. "The time making money should be greater than the time that you are spending money. Get a checking and a savings account if you don't have one. You won't know until it is too late that you should have separated business and personal funds and accounts."
