The company insists there's nothing dangerous about its formula.
The frat-boy favorite contains a chemical called propylene glycol, which can also be found in e-cigarettes and antifreeze. It's often used to absorb water and keep products moist. Fireball's European formula contains less propylene glycol than the formula sold in the U.S. and Canada. But in a recent shipment, the company accidentally sent over the North American version. Bottles containing the booze we Americans drink were considered not up to European regulations, and are being recalled.
Here in the States, the FDA considers it safe to use propylene glycol in food, and a Fireball spokeswoman told The Daily Beast their whisky contains less than one-eighth of the maximum allowed. The whiskey usually sold in Europe contains even less. The spokeswoman made it clear "all Fireball formulas are absolutely safe to drink." So don't worry – your Friday night pregame isn't in jeopardy.
