College President Tells Women Not to Report Rape

The Lincoln University president advised women not to put themselves in that situation, because apparently it's up to women.

During a speech at Lincoln University's All Woman Convocation, President Robert R. Jennings told women not to report rape, because "there's no more serious accusation" [via The Philadelphia Inquirer]. Jennings starts out by giving some misguided advice about how men will use women up (since apparently women can't be sexually open) and ends with telling them not to report rape because he believes most women just do it out of spite.

Reverend James Thomas, whose son is a junior at the university, told the Inquirer the comments are "frightening." Another parent, University of Pennsylvania professor Marybeth Gasman, called the speech, "disturbing, offensive, and sexist in nature."
Jennings has noted that the comments were taken out of context. "No one would ever discourage a young woman on this campus from reporting a sexual assault," he said. "In fact, I emphasize to them how serious that allegation is and that the university takes it very seriously and so does the federal government and so does the court." According to Jennings, he simply meant that women should never use rape as a revenge tactic. Which, despite his intentions, still perpetuates the idea that rape accusations shouldn't always be taken seriously.
