While the chances of this happening is minimal, you can avoid the terrible inconvenience of it happening to you by keeping all your "personal information" safe.
You should always watch for signs of any changes in the information you get from anyone in an online dating site. There should not be any kind of inconsistencies if people are telling the truth. If you find that someone has told you something at some stage and that information differs from another discussion they had with you then be wary of this person. These changes can relate to any areas of their life, from their employment, to their age, profession, interests, hobbies or any other kind of things you talk about.
Never be afraid to expect real direct answers to your questions regarding any matters that seem unusual, if you are unsatisfied with the information you received, then consider it grounds for terminating the relationship before you have any problems. Open honesty is a vital key to any successful relationship and if you haven't got that from the start, you are probably not going to get it as time goes by.
Always keep your personal information safe. If you connect with someone and are contacting each another by email, it is best to get a separate email address for that purpose so you can keep that part of your life separate from business affairs.
Never give anyone you don't personally know your home address until you are completely comfortable in doing so. You might decide later on down the road that you would like to end this relationship. It is a lot easier if they don't know where you live because they could be the type of person who might start stalking or harassing you when the relationship comes to an end.
Until you are completely sure you want someone new in your life to know more about you, it is also a good idea to keep your place of employment to yourself. If you feel any pressure to reveal this information, just tell them that you prefer to wait until you are a little further into your brand new relationship. If they can't seem to accept that, then you have a very good reason to be concerned.
Eventually you are going to want to meet your new online dating friend in person. When this happens, you should always arrange the first meeting in a public place where you can feel somewhat safer.
It is obvious, meeting in a safe location the very first time will be necessary and for the first meeting it should be in the daytime rather than at night. Meet somewhere public where there are several other people around. Let friends and family know where you are going and what time you will be there. You can even get them to look on from a distance to see that everything is going as planned and OK.
Always carry a fully charged cell phone along with you when you meet. If there are to be any changes of locations and times, you should call or text family or friends to let them know. It is also a good idea to arrive at meeting points in your own transportation so you have choices. If things are not going quite well you can always leave whenever you want to and you don't have to rely on your date at all to get you back home safely.
If you are meeting someone in an unfamiliar area then you need to take extra precautions. For those exciting out of town rendezvous' book your own private accommodation and don't let your new date know exactly where it is so you have a safe place to return to should you need it.
It is better to be safe than sorry. You will need to really spend some time with a person before you really get to know and trust them. The more time you spend communicating with them online, the better you will get at understanding what they are like. So don't rush into any relationship, no matter how you might be feeling. You don't need to compromise, particularly when it comes to matters as important as trust and personal online dating safety.
