Why You Need A Master Of Ceremonies At Your Event

Expert Author Michael Folgers
The responsibilities of the person designated as the master of ceremony is to make sure that the event runs smoothly and timely. That is quite a simplified definition of what they do and their role really runs much deeper than that. The major responsibilities of the MC or emcee can be categorized into three: 1.) Manage the behind the scenes of the whole event, 2.) Entertain the audience, and 3.) Run the programme without a hitch.
Manage the behind the scenes
A well experienced master of ceremony who knows how to handle any given situation is a valuable asset to have in your event. The emcee will be the one to update everyone regarding the flow of activities and to make sure that they are all on the same timetable. The caterers, the entertainment, the equipment handlers are all under the command of the emcee during the run of the programme. The behind the scenes could get chaotic and it is the task of the emcee to manage all of the arrangements being done. This is a duty that requires skill in management in both time and staff.
Entertain the audience
The audience is perhaps the most important responsibility of the master of ceremony. He/She will entertain the people so that they will not lose interest in
the happenings especially in a conference situation where time seems to run dull and boring. The emcee will constantly be providing announcements and keep attendees updated so as to avoid confusion in the crowd about what is currently going on. An important skill of the emcee is being able to tell and feel out the mood of the audience and give the necessary ice breakers in between lengthy talks. A personable and comedic emcee that can set a positive vibe throughout the whole event will be of huge advantage.
Run the programme without a hitch
The master of ceremony handles the flow of activities avoiding any possible delays. People's time is valuable and a crowd tends to go angsty if they're left waiting for a long time. When it comes to conferences or conventions with a lot of speakers, the emcee will have to balance out the time allocated for each speaker and their question and answer segments so as not to delay the next speaker. Make sure you get an emcee with good decision making skills. Otherwise, the organizers will be blamed if any problems arise. Ask the emcee to give out their opinion of the programme beforehand and if they can provide suggestions on how to better the flow of the event. With their experience and years performing at conventions, surely they will have a few tricks up their sleeves for event planning and management.
