Before I get started I want to say that I really do love being a woman. I don't want to be a man though I have had penis envy a time or two. Women are beautiful. Women are sexy. I love my womanly curves, wearing makeup, dresses, skirts and rockin' hot high heels. My closet is full of funky high heels of all heights and colors, some I haven't even worn yet! But the one thing I hate about being a woman is having a period every month! The bloating, the soiled sheets, the swollen breasts... okay I do like the swollen breasts part, but the rest of it is for the birds.
I blame any hot flashes on early menopause. I will be so happy when I really go through menopause and my body is no longer able to produce eggs especially since at my age my eggs are rotten anyway. I practice safe sex, but there have been times when I was happy to see my period because I was afraid I might be pregnant. Just so you know I was also practicing safe sex when I got pregnant with my child so that also added to the paranoia. I don't want more children so I don't plan to have more. I wish I could opt out of my period early.
I also tend to have a heavy flow during my period, so there are times when my panties and even my pants pay the price even if I am wearing a panty liner and using a Super tampon. I know, TMI, but you ladies understand where I am coming from. Speaking of Super, I love to get the multi-pack of Pearl tampons (the cardboard applicators hurt) that have Super, Regular and Light all in one pack. However, I do hate that they only put 8 Super in a pack. Are they serious?! Here's more TMI for you; I'd rather not wear panties at all so during "that time of the month" I have to pull out the infamous Period Panties. My heavy flow has also caused me to be embarrassed at least twice in the past that I can recall. It's never a good feeling when you have a stain that you need to hide from the public long enough to get home to change clothes.
I started my period at 13 and while my mom seemed to be overjoyed and explained to me that I was now a woman, I remained very confused and in pain. Having a period does not make a girl a woman. It unfortunately means you can have children, but that's about it. I think it's a shame that the menstrual cycle starts so early for us. I don't think our period should start until we're 18 and even that's too damn early! I also used to have major cramps when I was younger and got very sick and weak so my period shut me down on many an occasion.
When I was pregnant not having a period was absolutely wonderful and one of the major perks of pregnancy in my opinion. I also breastfed after my daughter was born which lead up to 9 more months of not having a period. I was not a happy camper when Aunt Flo showed her face again. My daughter is 11 now and I'm sure she will be starting her period soon. I am definitely not looking forward to it. Do any of you moms who've been there with your daughters have advice for me?
Other than bleeding for babies every month (I know, so crude) I think that being a woman is great! I love it! We're the shit! Especially Black women because we take shit from everyone on the planet including ourselves, but that just makes us stronger. We're the majority "minority". Now get out there and kick some ass!
