When planning to move to a new country overseas we all know that it can be an extremely stressful time in your life, with all of the documentation that you need to acquire, and this is no different when you are also planning on taking your vehicle with you. In this article we will look at all of the main pieces of documentation that you will required to know about before shipping your vehicle overseas with you.
When you are collecting the required documents you won't always be required to produce the original copy, but it is always a good idea to keep your entire original document in a safe location that can be easily accessed if another copy or the original itself is required for some reason during the journey. For instance there are many issues that can arise before your vehicle has even had the chance to leave the port.
Before the car shipping company can make your booking, you will be required to get copies of these documents:
  • V5C (Vehicle Registration Certificate) - you will always need to have the cars V5C or the logbook that it was previously known as, this document is used to prove your ownership over the vehicle and is the most vital document when you vehicle is being shipped overseas.
  • Bill of Sale - The bill of sale for the vehicle may be asked for if your name is not the one present on the vehicles original V5C, this is asked for as a security matter to make sure that you are the current legal owner of the vehicle that you are trying to ship.
  • Passport/Photo ID - You will be required to produce a copy of your photo page from your passport, or any other form of legal photo ID this is just another security measure that must be undertaken when shipping any vehicle overseas, it allows the shipping companies to then cross reference your details on your Passport/ID to the ones that are on the other pieces of documentation you have produced.
  • Consignee's Passport/Photo ID - If for some reason you are unable to pick up your vehicle once it reached its intended destination you will need to produce some sort of photo ID for your consignee so the car shipping company can pass them on to the port so they can release the vehicle to your consignee.
  • MOT Certificate - If you are planning to have your car picked up and delivered to the port then you will be required to produce a copy of your MOT certificate so they are able to prove that the vehicle that they are driving is legally safe to drive.
Once all of these documents have been produced to your shipping company they can go ahead and start the booking for your car to board the vessel of your choice. After all the booking has been placed and finalised the shipping company will be able to send you your shipping note which is a requirement for the vehicle to enter the port, the shipping note contains all of the information about your vehicle such as its booking number, the vessels details, port export and the port of arrival. Failure to produce this document when arriving at the port of departure can result in your vehicle not being accepted for departure which will incur additional fees and delays.
