Windlesham is a charming Surrey Heath village set in the South East of England. Like its close neighbours Virginia Water, Bagshot and Chobham, it is in the beautiful borough of Surrey.
Windlesham derives its name from the Windle Brook, which starts in the Swinley Forest of Berkshire, runs past the south of the village into Chomham. The area is rich in history having uncovered some Neolithic tools and implements thought to date back to the Bronze Age.
Nowadays Windlesham is a thriving community with a wonderful village spirit. This village is a fabulous spot to live in if access to Heathrow Airport and central London is important. Its convenient location, close to Junction 3 of the M3, has also attracted big business including the Eli Lilly and Rainbow Play Systems.
Windlesham village used to be a small community within Windsor Great Park. It built as a remote farming settlement around undulating heath, similar to Sunninghill. This quiet corner of the county appears to have been too sparsely inhabited to have been mentioned in the Domesday Book. There are references in historical records about the exploits of highwaymen who once plagued the area - undoubtedly this is why Windlesham Golf Club runs its very own Highwaymen's events.
The Windlesham village field is hosts a recreational park as well as a busy play area. A number of much-loved village events take place on the field. The most well-known of these events is the annual Windlesham Fete. The field is also used in the summer months by Windlesham Cricket Club setting the perfect English village scene.
Windlesham also offers different sports activities. It is not only famous for its Golf Club but it has a thriving running club too. The Windle Valley Runners running club is suitable for all standards of runner. The club meets three times a week and members can join for fun, fitness or competing.
The Windlesham Society encourages people living in the neighbourhood to take an active part in getting involved in the community and giving something back to your local community.
Famous residents of Windlesham past and present include Dr Brian May of the rock band Queen, Brian Blessed, Sir Nick Faldo, Agatha Christie, Glen Hoddle, Sarah, and Duchess of York!
