Most men fail at online dating and give up. I have several friends who never got a single date or even many responses after several months. Online dating is not hard but it does require some work and it has a steep learning curve. This article will enormously shorten your learning curve.
First of all, pick one or two sites to begin with. Two is preferable since if you only choose one you might not like it and be discouraged. I suggest considering only mainstream sites at first like Match, OKCupid, and Plenty of Fish. Match is not free but you will find an enormous amount of professional and attractive women there. OKCupid is a bit more laid back than Match, has functional free options, and plenty of women. Plenty of Fish, a free site, is a mixed bag. Sometimes I'll search and find no interesting women while other times I'll find lots of attractive and intelligent women quickly.
Next write a profile. You can use the same profile on multiple sites although you may need some minor modifications to fit the sites profile format. It is absolutely worth spending significant time writing your profile, although you can get something up relatively quickly and improve it later. Realize that many women will look at your profile before they decide whether to even read your email or not.
Men commonly make a profile about lists of facts. Women are more interested in feelings and emotions. Instead of saying something like "work hard, play hard" you can tell a story about working hard and playing hard that invokes feeling and emotions as one example. Looking at other men's profiles is a good idea as you will see how boring they are and can improve yours.
You'll need at least one picture, preferably of you looking good. Neatness and dress can often matter. Avoid any bare chested pictures as women hate these. Trust me on this.
Next, send out lots of messages to women. Try to send a few each night and if you get even a 20% response you are doing more than well, you are doing phenomenally well. Make sure each message is somewhat personal, referring to something from their profile. Sending the exact email to lots of women simply doesn't work.

You will need to send one or two messages back and forth minimum before you move forwards. Generally you will need to talk on the phone or text before women are comfortable meeting you in person.
