May Baskets: A Charming But Forgotten Tradition of Friendship

Expert Author C Tee Menser
The May Basket is a tradition originating in ancient times. The Puritans disparaged May Day celebrations so they never became popular in the United States. But the traditions of the maypole, May Queen, and hanging of May Baskets on May 1st are still celebrated in other parts of the world as remnants of the old European traditions.
I've always enjoyed putting together gift baskets. But unlike larger and more expensive baskets, the little May Baskets are easy and inexpensive to make. They usually consist of a small handmade paper basket filled with flowers. Small items like pieces of candy and perhaps other small items like shells or decorative pebbles can be added as well. The basket is then hung anonymously on the doorknob of a friend or neighbor. As a gardener, I tend to think of little items to include that might be gardening related, but just about anything small can be put into a May Basket. Or nothing more than the flowers can be included to more closely imitate the original tradition.
To make a simple May Basket, roll a piece of construction paper into a cone shape and staple or tape to hold the shape. Cut construction paper into 2-inch strips to form a handle and staple in place. Gluing two strips together will make a stronger handle with less chance of tearing. Decorate the basket with stickers, glitter, ribbons, bows or your own art work. Insert a paper doily or some colorful tissue paper to line the inside of the basket. If you will be adding live flowers, it might be a good idea to put the stems into a plastic baggie with a damp paper towel before adding them to the May Basket.
May Baskets can also be made from other items you may have around the house such as tin cans, small boxes, berry baskets, or even small paper plates. For the latter, you will need two paper plates. Cut one of them in half, line up the edges of the half plate with the whole one so that it forms a pocket, and staple in place. Use ribbon for a hanger. Decorate the plates or use some of the lovely printed paper plates that are available these days. Ideas are seemingly limitless.
May Baskets were traditionally made by children to be given to friends and neighbors and they remain a fun craft that most children enjoy. However, making and giving May Baskets shouldn't be limited to a children's activity. This lovely little tradition should be enjoyed by adults as well. It's a lot of fun to make and give something anonymously. This simple and inexpensive project will provide pleasure to both the maker and the recipient.
