Then you will find yourself in a world of hurt.
You must start going to the dentist on a regular basis. These five steps can get you back in the dentist chair:
1. Let's start when you call to schedule your appointment. Tell the person you speak with on the phone that you have an apprehension of going to the dentist.
Don't be embarrassed to mention this because they probably have many clients that experience dental anxiety and they can help you cope with it.
2. One simple thing you can do is to go in and have a conversation with your dentist to discuss some things the office can do to give you a level of comfort. You will also get a feel for the surroundings and this will also help you.
3. During previous dental visits if you have experienced a high level of nervousness with each appointment this is a suggestion I would recommend to you that you try.
Ask if you can schedule your dental work over a series of visits. With each positive result you can look forward to the next visit with less apprehension.
4. If your worry has progressed to the point that you are developing a dental phobia your dentist may prescribe for you an anxiety medication to make you comfortable before your visit.
You can actually be sedated before the procedure so the work can be done and the whole process can be very comfortable to you.
On a personal note my wife experiences anxiety during her dental visits. Her dentist gives her nitrous oxide which makes her feel relaxed and her trip to the dentist always has had a successful outcome.
5. When you are scheduling your appointment if you get the impression that the dental office isn't receptive to your dental concerns find another dentist.
There are many dental offices that will cater to any fear of the dentist that you are experiencing because they know that a happy patient will keep coming back for many years.
