Before going to bed, you determinedly set the alarm for 6 am and promptly go off to sleep at 11 pm. But when the alarm goes off, you wake up as if the house is on fire, look around, turn it off and go back to sleep. All this takes place in less than 30 seconds. So what about all the time you took to convince yourself to get up the following morning and go running in the park, which is a hop, skip and jump away from your place? Many of us lead a sedentary lifestyle and do not respect our bodies one bit. But our body definitely lives by one principle - vengeance! If we don't take care of it today, the body will rebel sooner or later.
That said, the body does not demand too much. You only need to pay attention to three key areas. That is food, exercise and a positive attitude.
- Eating Right - This is one area that people generally tend to ignore, even as they say they are leading a "healthy lifestyle." We eat without awareness. We hardly watch what we put in our mouths and this generally happens a lot when we are at a party or out with friends. Most of us tend to overeat, especially at restaurants and parties because we like fried, cheesy food and also because the host may push us to eat more. Self-awareness and being conscious of what we eat, is the first step towards healthy eating. Instead of eating and carrying junk like chips and biscuits to the office, make healthy choices like salads, dry fruits, fruits and crackers instead. NEVER skip breakfast and have a heavy one. Lunch should include a perfect combination of proteins and carbohydrates. Dinner should be light and should not include any carbs.
- Sweat It Out - There is no substitute for hard work and this is applicable to exercise too. Walking for 45 minutes daily can help to keep diseases like diabetes, hypertension and heart attacks at bay. Joining a gym can also be extremely beneficial if it's the right one. Lifting weights strengthens bones and muscles and cardio exercises help to burn calories. Cardio exercises include machines like the treadmill and inbound cycling as well as fun sessions of zumba and yoga, make burning calories that much more enjoyable.
- B+ - It's not just a blood group. No matter what happens, always stay positive. It is very easy to give up and go back to living the same inactive lifestyle. People tend to give up easily, when they take up an exercise program or a diet. They do it out of boredom, lack of motivation or temptation. If focus and motivation is a problem, then take the help of a dietician or a trainer at the gym. If you are overweight and want to lose weight, one trick that helps to achieve goals is to stick a picture of a thin you or of someone who has the figure/physique you wish for and look at it first thing every morning.
The key to success is to be self-aware, consistent and always determined. Don't give up just because it's difficult. A healthy lifestyle is within your grasp, all you have to do is reach out.
