Fleming Island is an expansive portion of the larger city Orange Park. It is known as a bedroom community of Jacksonville. There are many major developments in the area, including Eagle Harbor, Fleming Island Plantation, and Pace Island. The high school is Fleming Island High School which was opened in 2003.
FlemingIsland is one of the richest zip codes in the Jacksonville area. The average household income is nearly $105,000 with a net worth that borders on $960,000. Fleming Island has its own movie theater and many chain businesses, including Wal Mart, Target, Home Depot, Kohl's, Publix, Winn-Dixie, Michael's, and Pet Smart.
The Clay County Public Library Headquarters is located in Fleming Island, along with many of Clay County locales such as the soccer fields. The population of Clay County is nearing 200,000 people with the county seat in Green Cove Springs.
The county is part of the greater Jacksonville metro area. It was created in 1858 in honor of Henry clay, a famous secretary of state in the 19th century. Clay County used to be a popular tourist destination for tourists from northern states.
The county sported warm springs and a mild climate. Steamboats brought them to hotels in cities that still exist today. President Grover Cleveland was a popular visitor and even had hot spring water shipped to the White House.
Moccasin Slough is another park that is geared for children. It is located on the north side of the island on Westover Road. Nature lovers will truly enjoy Moccasin Slough. It was owned by the Pace family in the past, a rich and historic family in the area. There is a canal that almost goes to Doctors Lake. FlemingIsland residents still enjoy this canal, as it is navigable among swampy portions by canoe or other small boats.
Fleming Island is not technically an island. Instead, it is a former wetland area that has developed into several golf courses and suburbs. In 2004, it was given a different zip code than Orange Park, making it its own unincorporated community.
In 1942, the US Navy built four asphalt runways and established an outlying field for the Navy. This auxiliary airfield was abandoned in the sixties because it was too short to accommodate jet aircraft in operation at nearby airfields. The runways were demolished for residential development in the nineties.
The population of FlemingIsland is just over 28,000 people with 9,800 households on the island. There are many options for housing, including apartments, condos, townhomes, patio homes, and single family homes. There are homes for empty nesters, first time homebuyers, and estate neighborhoodluxury homes on the water.
Fleming Island is bordered by water or wetlands on all sides, which is why it is named as an island even though it technically is not. There is St. John's River in the east, Doctor's Lake north, Black Creek south, and Swimming Pen Creek in the west. Wetlands from Swimming Pen Creek to Black Creek are not navigable.
