Are Chewed Wires Covered by Your Car Insurance?

Expert Author Toby Bateson
So you walk out to your car in the morning ready to head off to your day's toil and a light comes on that shouldn't, your stereo won't come on, or worse yet, the car won't start at all!
You get agitated, walk around scratching your head for half an hour before opening the bonnet to inspect the engine. Then it becomes all too clear, you notice what looks like chewed wires. Chewed as opposed to worn wires point to one thing - a rodent has taken up residence in your car and is using it to sharpen his teeth.
Are You Covered Against Rodents?
The first thing that will probably pop into your head (after mentally going through what you want to do to the rat) is whether you are covered for chewed wires on your insurance.
This is not the same for everyone as it all depends on the cover you have and also how your policy is worded. To start with, the only insurance that will cover you for chewed wires is fully comprehensive. As the name suggests, this covers you for almost all eventualities.
Rodent Vandalism
If you have tried to save a few quid by only taking out third party fire and theft then sorry, you will have to foot the bill yourself. In fairness, most motorists never consider that they will have to claim on their insurance for what amounts to rodent vandalism.
It may be worth checking that you are covered should the worst happen. Just because we don't see rats doesn't mean there aren't any within only a few feet of you, your house and your car. They only come out at night so being forewarned is being forearmed.
Rodent Damage Can Hurt Your Bank Balance
Don't be embarrassed about ringing your insurance company to make a claim for the chewed wiring. You will be surprised how many people make this claim. The garage will also put down on the worksheet that this was the cause, so they won't think you are trying to pull a fast one. What they will object to however, is repeated claims for the same thing and you may find your premium rocketing if you don't take steps to protect your vehicle from these razor toothed animals.
The moral of this tale is simple. Fully comprehensive is the only way to go when it comes to your car, but still check the small print as rampant rodents can cost you a small fortune if you don't have the right cover in place.
